You should always drive carefully when on the roads in Central Florida, but the need for safety is more important than ever this month. The month of August has been deemed the most dangerous month to drive, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. More than 15,000 people died in motor vehicle crashes in August over a five-year span (2012-2016). Specifically, August 2nd is the deadliest driving day of the year, having more fatalities due to auto accidents than any other calendar day over that same five-year period.
The study looked at over 600,000 members in over 1.3 million vehicles enrolled in Nationwide’s SmartRide program. They reviewed car accidents over the course of five years, as well as the number of deaths resulting from these accidents. They found that the highest number of traffic fatalities over those five years occurred during the month of August.
It was reported that 15, 914 people died in car accidents during the month of August through the five years surveyed, which were 2012 to 2016. Oddly enough, the date that produced the most fatal accidents was August 2. The study showed that 505 deaths occurred due to traffic accidents on August 2 over the course of those five years.
Not only does this month produce the most traffic fatalities nationwide, but Florida is reported as having the most congested roads during the month of August. During the month of August 2017, Florida drivers traveled in the most congested traffic conditions than in any other state. It is also estimated that Florida drivers spend 16.3 percent of their time stuck in gridlock this month last year.
Traffic congestion is reported as the leading cause for most of these accidents. As drivers suddenly speed up and brake hard to avoid hitting the car in front of them, the chances of them getting into an accident go up significantly. Road rage can also play a factor in these accidents the longer a driver is stuck in traffic.
What makes August 2 so unique that it causes so many traffic accidents? Many attribute it to the increased number of tourists visiting our state and warm weather, with sunny skies, brings out more drivers, leading to more traffic congestion and more accidents. The nice weather can lead to increased confidence behind the wheel. Many travelers choose to take vacations during that first week of August, and Orlando is a prime vacation hotspot.
